What Happens on a Wednesday Night?
Club nights are two hours of proper, hands-on angling. Juniors are welcomed by our coaches, and after a quick safety chat it's straight into the evening's activity — coached fishing on the bank in summer, or rigs, floats, knots and angling workshops indoors through the winter. Every child works at their own pace in a small group, with a coach never more than a few steps away.
Here's the important bit: the club runs as a new structured course every month — one skill, built up Wednesday by Wednesday. Registering for the month's course is how your child joins; one free registration covers every club night that month. There's no pressure and nothing to prepare, and parents are encouraged to stay, watch and join in.
Summerhayes Fisheries, Bridgwater
Real fishing on a safe, well-managed working fishery — casting, feeding a swim, playing and landing fish, and caring for the catch.
Bridgwater College Academy (BCA)
Our indoor Winter Angling Programme — rig and float making, knots, tackle workshops, guest speakers, quizzes and games.
What Your Child Will Learn at Junior Club
Wednesday nights follow our coaching pathway, so juniors aren't just fishing — they're building real, structured skills week by week.
Whip, Waggler, Pole & Feeder
The core methods of coarse fishing, taught step by step across the seasons — from a first cast to confident, independent fishing.
Rigs, Knots & Tackle Craft
Juniors learn to build their own rigs, tie reliable knots and understand their tackle — the winter workshops are famous for this.
Water Safety First
Every junior learns to stay safe around water — the habits that protect them on every fishing trip for the rest of their lives.
Fish Care & Respect for Nature
Handling fish properly, using nets and mats correctly, and understanding the waters and wildlife around them.
Friendship & Confidence
A welcoming group of young anglers who cheer each other's catches — many of our juniors now fish together at weekends.
Matches & Milestones
Friendly club matches and certificates mark every junior's progress — there's always a next goal to aim for.

Junior Club Questions, Answered
Everything parents usually ask before their child's first Wednesday night with us.
Nothing — Wednesday club nights are completely free, every week, all year round. There's no joining fee, no equipment to buy and no hidden costs. The club is run by volunteers and funded by donations so that no child is ever excluded because of money.
Please register — the club runs as a monthly course, and registering your child for the current course is how they join. It's free and only takes a couple of minutes, and one registration covers every Wednesday of that month. If it's your first time, you're also very welcome to get in touch first and we'll look out for you on the night.
Yes — they're two different things. The Wednesday Night Club is a monthly course: your child comes every Wednesday that month and builds one skill week by week. Our taster sessions are one-off, one-to-one coaching sessions of one to two hours, run at weekends and in the school holidays — perfect for a first try before joining the club.
Just weather-appropriate clothes (warm layers and sturdy shoes or wellies by the water, sun cream and a hat in summer) and a drink. Everything else — rods, poles, nets, bait and tuition — is provided free every week.
From April to September we're at Summerhayes Fisheries, Bridgwater, on the bank. From October to the end of March we move indoors to Bridgwater College Academy (BCA) for the Winter Angling Programme. Same club, same time — every Wednesday, 4:30–6:30pm.
Absolutely. New beginners join us all the time, and our coaching pathway means every child works at their own level. A coach will get your child catching and enjoying themselves on their very first night — no experience needed at all.
Parents and carers are warmly encouraged to stay and join in — it's the best way to see how we coach, and many parents learn to fish alongside their children so families can carry on fishing together at weekends.
Through the winter we're indoors at BCA, so weather is never an issue. In summer, sessions run in most conditions — if conditions ever make a session unsafe, we'll always contact parents directly with plenty of notice.
Yes — fishing is one of the most inclusive sports there is, and our coaches have experience supporting children with a wide range of additional needs. Tell us what would help your child feel comfortable and we'll make it work.
