WHY ANGLING WORKS

A Classroom Without Walls

Fishing may look simple on the surface, but it provides a unique learning environment. For many young people — particularly those who struggle in a traditional classroom — the quiet, outdoor setting and structured-but-relaxed coaching style unlock engagement that's hard to reach anywhere else. Our sessions complement education by letting students learn practical skills in the natural world, at their own pace, with visible success built into every session.

Calm Water, Structured Sessions, Real Progress

Angling can be particularly beneficial for children with special educational needs and disabilities. The quiet outdoor environment and structured-but-relaxed coaching style often provide an ideal setting for young people who find traditional classroom learning challenging.

We work carefully with staff and parents to understand each group before we start, and adapt pace, group size and activities so every student can succeed.

School Programme Questions, Answered

The practical questions teachers, SENCOs and provision leads ask us before booking a programme.

Yes — all coaches are DBS-checked, safeguarding trained, and sessions follow Angling Trust safeguarding guidance. We're happy to share policies and risk assessments with your safeguarding lead.

No — sessions are designed for complete beginners and we provide all tackle, bait and equipment. Students just need weather-appropriate clothing.

Every venue and session is risk-assessed in advance, sessions begin with a water safety briefing, and coach-to-student ratios are agreed with you based on your group's needs.

Yes — angling naturally supports science, geography and PSHE topics, and we can shape sessions around specific learning outcomes, including the Cast for Life learning pathway.

Primarily at Summerhayes Fisheries near Bridgwater and other well-managed Somerset fisheries — and through the winter we can deliver indoor angling workshops at your setting or ours.

It depends on group size, duration and venue — contact us and we'll put a proposal together. Community funding and partner support mean cost is often lower than you'd expect.
