Why a 1-to-1 Lesson Is the Best First Cast
Group activities suit some children — but for a very first fishing experience, nothing beats one-to-one. Your child gets a qualified, DBS-checked coach's full attention, learns at exactly their own pace, and lands their first fish without an audience. It's the gentlest possible introduction to angling, and it works brilliantly for nervous beginners, younger children and kids who find group settings overwhelming.
From Booking to First Fish in Three Steps

A First Lesson That Teaches Real Skills
Every lesson is structured coaching, not just supervised fishing — these are the foundations your child takes away.
Water Safety First
Safe habits around water — the lesson every angler needs before their first cast.
Tackle Basics
What the rod, pole, line, float and hook actually do — explained simply, hands-on.
Casting & Control
First casts with a whip or rod, taught step by step until it clicks.
Reading the Float
Spotting bites and striking at the right moment — the most exciting skill in fishing.
Playing & Landing Fish
How to bring a fish in calmly and use a landing net properly.
Fish Care & Respect
Gentle handling, unhooking and returning fish safely — respect for the catch from day one.
Loved It? The Wednesday Club Is the Next Step
Most children who take a taster lesson want more — and the next step is completely free too. Our Wednesday Night Junior Club runs a brand-new structured coaching course every month, 4:30–6:30pm, building the skills from their first lesson into whip, waggler, pole and feeder fishing week by week.

Kids' Fishing Lessons, Answered
The questions parents ask before booking a first fishing lesson.
Nothing — our one-to-one taster lessons are completely free, including all tackle, bait and coaching. The club is volunteer-run and funded by donations so cost is never a barrier.
We coach children aged 5 to 16. Lessons are one-to-one, so the pace, language and session length are adapted entirely to your child.
At safe, well-managed fisheries across Somerset near Bridgwater — including Summerhayes Fisheries, The Sedges, Viaduct, Avalon and Burton Springs. The venue for each date is shown when you book.
No — we provide everything: rods, poles, nets, bait, the lot. Just bring weather-appropriate clothes and a drink.
Yes, parents and carers are welcome and encouraged to stay — watch, take photos, or pick up the basics alongside your child so you can fish together afterwards.
One-to-one lessons are ideal for exactly that. Our coaches have experience supporting children with a wide range of additional needs, including autism and ADHD, and the quiet waterside setting helps many children settle quickly. Tell us what would help when you book.
Taster and coaching sessions run at weekends and throughout the school holidays. Dates are released regularly — check the booking list above, and book early as one-to-one spaces are limited.
A lesson is a one-off, one-to-one session — the perfect first experience. The Wednesday Night Club is our weekly club, run as a new structured course every month. Most children start with a lesson, then register for the club course to keep progressing.
