Covey Fisheries is one of Somerset’s most exciting and modern coarse fishing venues, best known for its fast-paced action and thriving stocks of F1 carp. It’s a venue that really comes alive in juniors’ hands, where bites come regularly and learning happens quickly.

The well-designed lakes, comfortable pegs, and consistent fishing make Covey an excellent place for young anglers to experience a more active, match-style approach in a safe and supportive environment. It’s ideal for building confidence, improving reactions, and helping juniors understand how speed, accuracy, and feeding all work together.

For coaching and taster sessions, Covey offers something a little different. The pace of the fishing keeps juniors engaged, focused, and smiling, while coaches can introduce key skills such as timing bites, controlling a pole efficiently, and making quick but sensible decisions on the bank. It’s challenging enough to feel exciting, but structured enough to remain fun and accessible.

For sessions at Covey Fisheries, a simple pole setup is the best choice. Poles in the 8–10 metre range are ideal for juniors, allowing good reach without becoming tiring to handle. Elastic should be balanced and forgiving to cope with lively F1s while still protecting the fish.

Light but strong pole rigs with sensitive floats help juniors spot quick bites, while size 16–18 hooks are perfect for common F1 baits. A landing net with a suitable mesh size, along with a disgorger and unhooking mat, is essential to ensure fish are handled safely and confidently.

Keeping tackle organised and uncomplicated helps juniors focus on timing, feeding, and enjoying the action rather than dealing with unnecessary setup issues.

At Covey, pellets are the go-to bait for F1 fishing. 4–6mm pellets work well on the hook, while micro pellets are ideal for accurate, regular feeding. These baits encourage quick bites and help juniors learn how feeding patterns affect fish behaviour.

Sweetcorn is another excellent option, especially for visibility and bite confidence, while maggots can be useful during slower spells or for mixing things up. Coaches will always guide juniors on bait choice, feeding amounts, and timing to suit conditions on the day.

*All bait must follow fishery rules and guidance. Coaches will always advise on approved bait and best practice.
