Teaching Young Anglers the Fundamentals of Safe and Responsible Fishing

This week marked the start of a new month of coaching for Summerhayes Juniors Angling Club (SHJ) as our young anglers returned to the bank for the first session of our beginner angling programme.

Our junior angling sessions are designed to introduce children and beginners to fishing in a safe, structured and educational environment, while developing the key skills needed to become responsible anglers.

Throughout this month, the focus of our programme is on the fundamentals of angling, ensuring every young angler understands the essential foundations before progressing into more advanced fishing methods.

These fundamentals include:

  •  Waterside safety and safe behaviour near water
  •  Respect for the natural environment
  •  Responsible angling practices
  •  Safe fish handling and fish care
  •  Understanding basic fishing tackle and equipment

By building these foundations early, we help young anglers develop a lifelong respect for the sport of coarse fishing, the environment, and the fish they catch.

Session 1 – Welcome to Angling: Discover the Water

The first session of the course, “Welcome to Angling — Discover the Water,” introduced our junior anglers to the waterside environment and gave many of them their first experience of fishing.

The session focused on beginner whip fishing, one of the safest and most effective methods for introducing children to angling. Whip fishing allows young anglers to learn essential fishing skills such as bait presentation, float control and fish playing without the complexity of reels or advanced tackle.

Our experienced coaching team guided the group through the key principles of beginner angling while ensuring every participant felt safe, supported and confident throughout the session.

Waterside Safety – The Most Important Lesson

Safety is always the number one priority at Summerhayes Juniors Angling Club.

At the start of the session, coaches delivered a waterside safety briefing, introducing the juniors to the Five Waterside Safety Rules and explaining how to behave responsibly when fishing near water.

Young anglers were shown:

  •  Where safety equipment such as life rings and first aid kits are located
  •  Why running near the water is dangerous
  •  How to handle fishing tackle safely
  •  The importance of listening to coaches and supervising adults

Learning these safety habits is essential for ensuring that children can enjoy fishing while staying safe around lakes, canals and rivers.

Learning to Fish with the Whip

After the safety introduction, coaches demonstrated the basics of whip fishing for beginners.

The juniors were introduced to:

  •  The whip rod and basic tackle setup
  •  How to safely hold and control the rod
  •  How to lower the rig into the water correctly
  •  How to watch the float and recognise a bite

The group then moved into practical fishing, where each young angler had the opportunity to apply what they had learned and experience fishing first-hand.

This hands-on learning is a vital part of developing confidence and helping beginners understand how fishing works in practice.

Respecting Nature and Caring for Fish

A key message throughout the session was the importance of respecting nature and protecting fish.

Our coaches demonstrated safe fish handling techniques, explaining how anglers should care for fish properly before returning them safely to the water.

Young anglers were also encouraged to respect their surroundings by:

  •  Keeping the bank clean
  •  Looking after wildlife and habitats
  •  Leaving the environment exactly as they found it

These lessons help develop anglers who not only enjoy fishing but also act as responsible stewards of the natural environment.

Building Confidence and Responsibility

By the end of the session, many of the juniors had already developed a strong understanding of the basics of angling.

Participants successfully:

  •  Identified basic fishing tackle
  •  Followed the group code of conduct
  •  Demonstrated safe behaviour at the waterside
  •  Completed their first safe fishing attempts

Most importantly, they showed enthusiasm, patience and a willingness to learn — all essential qualities for becoming successful anglers.

Angling as Education

At Summerhayes Juniors Angling Club, fishing is about far more than catching fish.

Our coaching programme links angling with wider learning outcomes including:

Science – understanding water environments, fish behaviour and basic physics of fishing tackle.

Mathematics – measuring depth, counting fish, and analysing results.

Personal development and safety (PSHE) – learning responsibility, teamwork and safe behaviour around water.

This educational approach makes angling an incredibly valuable activity for young people, helping them develop skills that extend well beyond the bank.

Looking Ahead to the Next Sessions

This was the first session of a six-session beginner angling course, and it provided a fantastic start to the programme.

Over the coming weeks, our junior anglers will continue to develop their skills, gain confidence, and learn more about angling techniques, watercraft and environmental awareness.

Most importantly, they will continue to experience the excitement, patience and enjoyment that fishing can bring.

The enthusiasm shown during this first session was fantastic to see, and the coaches are extremely proud of the effort shown by all the young anglers.

Encouraging the Next Generation of Anglers

At Summerhayes Juniors Angling Club, our mission is simple:

To help young people discover angling in a safe, welcoming and educational environment, while developing the skills and respect needed to enjoy fishing for life.
