  • Bringing Fishing to Life: Our Partnership with SASP at Summerhayes Fisheries

Fishing is more than just a sport—it’s a way to connect with nature, learn patience, and build lifelong skills. This year, we are thrilled to partner with Somerset Activity & Sports Partnership (SASP) to introduce 120 children from across Somerset to the joy of fishing through six dedicated coaching sessions at Summerhayes Fisheries.

With many children seeking a sport that suits them, our goal is to provide them with an exciting, hands-on angling experience that could ignite a lifelong passion. Thanks to SASP’s dedication to making sports accessible, we are able to reach children who may not be regularly active or have had limited exposure to outdoor pursuits.

Why This Initiative Matters

For many children, traditional sports like football, rugby, or athletics may not always be the right fit. Angling provides a fantastic alternative that is:

✔ Accessible – Anyone can take part, regardless of physical ability or experience.
✔ Relaxing yet engaging – It promotes mindfulness and focus while still being interactive.
✔ Educational – Teaches water safety, fish conservation, and the importance of patience.
✔ A lifelong skill – Unlike some competitive sports, fishing is an activity that can be enjoyed for a lifetime.

Through this program, we hope to show children that fishing can be fun, rewarding, and beneficial to their well-being.

The Role of Summerhayes Fisheries

A key component of this initiative is our long-standing relationship with Summerhayes Fisheries. For over 11 years, Pete and Sally have made Summerhayes the home of our club, providing a welcoming, well-maintained venue where young anglers can learn and grow. Their generosity and commitment to grassroots angling make them the perfect hosts for this initiative, ensuring that every child who participates has access to a safe and well-stocked fishery.

Summerhayes provides the ideal setting for junior coaching, offering a variety of pegs, calm waters, and an environment where children can feel comfortable learning at their own pace. Their ongoing support is crucial to the success of our coaching programs, and we are incredibly grateful for their continued involvement.

What to Expect from the Coaching Sessions

Each of the six coaching sessions is designed to provide children with the fundamental skills they need to enjoy fishing. Our experienced coaches will guide them through:

🎣 Casting & Pole Fishing Techniques – Learning how to handle fishing rods and poles with confidence.
🌊 Water Safety & Awareness – Teaching the importance of safety around lakes and rivers.
🐟 Fish Handling & Conservation – Understanding ethical angling and catch-and-release principles.
🔍 Bait & Tackle Basics – Choosing the right bait, setting up rigs, and understanding different fishing methods.
🏆 Building Confidence & Enjoyment – Ensuring every child has a positive and fulfilling experience.

Through patient coaching and structured learning, our sessions will cater to beginners, ensuring every child leaves with new skills and great memories.

The Bigger Picture: Inspiring the Next Generation

This partnership with SASP is about more than just teaching kids to fish—it’s about opening doors to new possibilities. Many of these children may never have considered angling as a sport or hobby, and by providing them with this experience, we hope to spark an interest that lasts a lifetime.

Fishing offers so many benefits, from boosting mental well-being to developing patience and problem-solving skills. By engaging young people early on, we are not only introducing them to a new activity but also creating opportunities for them to get involved in local clubs, competitions, and outdoor learning.

How You Can Get Involved

We welcome support from the wider community! Whether you’re an experienced angler looking to volunteer or a parent interested in getting your child involved, we’d love to hear from you. The more we can engage, educate, and inspire, the stronger our angling community will become.

📢 Spread the word – Encourage young people to try something new!
🤝 Volunteer – Help support coaching sessions and mentor young anglers.
🎣 Join the club – If your child enjoys the sessions, consider joining us for future events.

Together, with SASP and Summerhayes Fisheries, we are creating a new generation of anglers, giving children across Somerset the chance to discover a sport that could stay with them for a lifetime.
