A Parent’s Guide to Joining
Preparing, and Thriving at the Lakeside
There’s something uniquely wonderful about seeing a child completely immersed in nature — the focus, the excitement, the joy of discovery. For many families, Summerhayes Juniors is the first step into a world that blends tradition with adventure, learning with play. Whether your child is a total beginner or already casting confidently, this guide will walk you through everything you need to know to get started.
Why Fishing? Why Now?
In a world of fast screens and busy schedules, fishing offers something rare: stillness. It's a break from pressure. A place to breathe. But it’s not just about catching fish — it’s about growing as people.
At Summerhayes Juniors, kids learn more than how to cast a rod. They learn patience, perseverance, respect for nature, and how to work both independently and as part of a team. It’s a hobby, yes — but it’s also a foundation for life skills that will serve them far beyond the lake.

Who Can Join?
The club is open to all young people aged 4–16, regardless of experience, ability, or background. There’s no need to own expensive gear or know the difference between a whip and a waggler — that’s what we’re here for. All you need is curiosity and a willingness to give it a go.
Many of our members are complete beginners when they arrive. Some are quiet, some are loud, some are nervous, and some can’t wait to get stuck in. Within a few sessions, they’re part of the gang — sharing tips, laughing at tangles, and celebrating every catch.

FAQs
What to Expect: Your First Session
-
Sessions run every Wednesday from 4:30 PM to 6:30 PM. During the warmer months, we meet lakeside at Summerhayes Fishery. In the winter, we move indoors to The Sedges Fishery, Bridgwater, for hands-on workshops and learning sessions.
-
You’ll be greeted by friendly faces — coaches, volunteers, and other families. Juniors are grouped by age and ability, and everyone is introduced to the basics of angling at their own pace.
-
Don’t worry if you don’t have equipment. The club provides rods, whips, bait, and all the essentials. As your child grows in confidence, we’ll guide you through the process of building their own kit if they want to get more involved.
-
Expect laughter. Expect mud. Expect questions, learning, excitement, and maybe a little frustration (every angler has a few "the one that got away" stories!). Most of all, expect your child to leave with a big smile and stories to tell.
What Your Child Will Learn
Our coaching is structured but fun. Each course module focuses on a specific angling method or skill, including:
- Whip Fishing – Perfect for beginners, using short rods and no reels
- Waggler Fishing – Casting with floats to catch silvers at distance
- Pole Fishing – Precision fishing with longer reach and finesse
- Feeder & Bomb Fishing – Learning to use groundbait and bottom rigs
- Knot-Tying, Rigs & Setup – Building their own gear step by step
- Environmental Awareness – Respecting wildlife, litter picking, and conservation
- Match Preparation – Getting ready for club competitions and friendly matches
We also introduce kids to catch and release ethics, safe handling techniques, and how to read the water, all in a way that’s accessible, interactive, and genuinely fun.

Tips for Parents
- Bring a change of clothes – Things get muddy!
- Water and snacks – Kids burn through energy quickly when they’re outside.
- Stay and watch – You’re more than welcome to join us on the bank.
- Get involved – Many parents become vital helpers and even bailiffs!
- Talk about it after – Ask your child what they learned and what they enjoyed. It helps reinforce the experience.

What Happens in Winter?
From November to May, we keep the momentum going with indoor workshops at The Sedges. These sessions are creative, social, and packed with practical skills:
- Float-making
- Tackle maintenance
- Bait mixing
- Rigs & hooklength building
- Safety briefings
- Fishing-themed quizzes and activities
It’s the perfect way to stay connected during the off-season and prepare for the spring return to the water.

Events, Matches & Milestones
Throughout the year, we host:
- Fun Matches — Lighthearted competitions where kids can test their skills
- Charity Events — Raising funds and awareness for good causes
- Presentation Evenings — Celebrating progress, effort, and sportsmanship
- Special Workshops — Guest coaches, family days, and surprises
These events help bring the whole community together and give juniors a sense of accomplishment they’ll never forget.
