About This Course
This structured 4-week course is designed for juniors who already have a basic understanding of pole fishing and are ready to take their skills to the next level. Focusing on three specialised techniques—margin fishing, shallow fishing, and paste fishing—this course teaches juniors how to target larger carp more effectively using pole setups. Each week builds on the previous session, combining theory, hands-on rig work, feeding strategy, and fish-handling skills. The final session brings all techniques together in a fully practical fishing experience, capped with an assessment and certificate of completion.
Course Structure
Fishing in the margins—close to the edge of the lake—is a proven method for catching large carp. In warm weather and quiet swims, big fish often patrol the margins for natural food. Juniors will explore the reasons behind this behaviour and how to spot signs of feeding carp near the bank.
Margin fishing demands heavier tackle than standard pole setups. Participants will learn how to assemble a robust rig with strong elastic (rated 14+) and larger hook sizes to safely manage powerful fish. The importance of using side puller kits and properly balanced rigs will be demonstrated step-by-step.
This segment focuses on how to correctly feed a margin swim. Juniors will learn when to use groundbait, paste, corn, or pellets—and how to avoid overfeeding, which can scare fish away. Understanding feeding volume, timing, and placement will be key takeaways.
Playing a big carp in shallow margins is a challenge, and this part of the session focuses on how to control fish without causing stress. Juniors will practice rod positioning, elastic control, and smooth netting techniques, always prioritising fish welfare and angler safety.
Shallow fishing with a pole is a highly effective technique in warmer months when fish feed confidently in the upper layers. Participants will discuss how light levels, water temperature, and competition affect carp behaviour near the surface.
This week’s practical element focuses on setting up short pole rigs with small floats and tight control over line length. Juniors will be guided in selecting the right float size, hook pattern, and elastic rating for shallow work—usually between 12 and 14.
Effective shallow fishing often relies on regular loose feeding. Using casters, pellets, or bandums, juniors will learn how to feed little and often to keep fish active and in the swim. Safe and accurate use of a catapult will be a key skill practiced throughout the session.
Unlike margin fishing, shallow fishing demands lightning-fast reactions. Juniors will practice quick flick-strikes while maintaining calm and control during the fight. The session also includes tips on recognising false bites and managing elastic for mid-water hook-ups.
Paste is a soft, mouldable bait that large carp find irresistible. This week’s lesson dives into why paste is so effective—offering a natural presentation and slow breakdown that big fish can’t resist. Juniors will compare paste to other baits and discover where it excels.
The session includes a practical workshop on how to mix paste to the ideal consistency. Participants will learn to test, tweak, and adapt their mix depending on temperature, water depth, and fish activity. Clean hands and organised workspaces will be strongly encouraged!
Paste fishing requires specialist floats and robust rigs. Juniors will assemble paste-specific setups with large hooks and strong elastics (rated 14–16). They will also learn how to use pole pots for accurately placing paste and feed without disturbing the swim.
Due to its softness, paste fishing needs a delicate strike and steady pressure once the fish is hooked. This section focuses on striking timing, avoiding premature lifts, and managing fish with smooth, continuous pressure to prevent hook pulls or breakages.
In the final week, juniors will put all their skills into practice in a real fishing session. They’ll be encouraged to make their own decisions on rig choice, feeding strategy, and swim selection. Coaches will provide light supervision, allowing juniors to work more independently.
Each participant will assess the conditions on the day—wind, temperature, water clarity—and choose a technique that suits the scenario. This session tests the ability to adapt, problem-solve, and apply everything learned across margin, shallow, and paste fishing.
To complete the course, juniors will take part in a two-part assessment. The first is a short multiple-choice quiz reviewing the key principles and safety considerations. The second is a hands-on practical assessment that includes rig setup, feeding, casting, landing, and unhooking a fish correctly.
On completion of the course, all participants will receive a Certificate of Achievement, recognising their advanced skills and commitment to responsible angling. This session ends with a group reflection and a chance to talk about future angling goals.
