About This Course

This 5-week course introduces juniors to feeder fishing, covering essential techniques, tackle setup, feeding strategies, casting accuracy, and fish-handling skills. The course is designed to build confidence and capability in using both method and cage feeders. Juniors will progress from basic rig setup to full fishing practice, concluding with a practical assessment and certificate of completion.

Course Structure

Understanding the Basics 5 mins

Feeder fishing is a highly effective method for targeting fish on the bottom using a baited feeder to deliver groundbait or pellets alongside the hook bait. In this opening session, juniors will explore what feeder fishing involves, how it differs from other angling styles, and why it’s particularly useful in both stillwaters and slow-moving rivers. This foundational knowledge sets the stage for the technical skills they'll develop over the coming weeks.

Types of Feeders 5 mins

Participants will be introduced to the most common types of feeders: inline, method, cage, and pellet feeders. Each type will be shown in use, with a discussion about when and why anglers choose one over another. Juniors will gain a working knowledge of how feeders are loaded, attached, and adapted for different fishing conditions.

Setting Up a Feeder Rig 5 mins

Learning to correctly assemble a feeder rod is crucial. Juniors will be guided through the step-by-step process of attaching the reel, threading the mainline, tying the feeder rig, and preparing it for casting. Emphasis will be placed on accuracy, safety, and rig balance, ensuring juniors leave with the confidence to replicate the setup independently.

How the Quivertip Works 5 mins

A key part of feeder fishing is bite indication, which is shown through the flexible quivertip on the rod. The group will learn how to read subtle movements, distinguish between line bites and real takes, and adjust rod position to maximise visibility and responsiveness.

Perfecting the Cast 5 mins

In this session, juniors will develop their casting technique to ensure safe, controlled, and consistent delivery of their feeder rigs. They will be taught the importance of body position, grip, and release timing, with live demonstrations and personalised support. Practicing accurate casting is essential for building a successful swim.

Using the Line Clip 5 mins

The line clip on the reel is an essential tool for maintaining distance accuracy. Participants will learn how to clip up safely and use this feature to land their feeder in the exact same spot every time. This session reinforces muscle memory and introduces the importance of repetition and control in feeder fishing.

Distance & Direction Control 5 mins

Juniors will practice casting at targets to refine their accuracy. By aiming for set markers or hula hoops placed in the water, they’ll learn how to judge both distance and direction. This exercise builds confidence and lays the groundwork for precise bait presentation during real fishing situations.

The Role of Feed 5 mins

This week focuses on understanding how to attract and hold fish in your swim. Juniors will explore different feeding strategies and how to build a swim gradually using a balance of groundbait and pellets. They’ll also learn how to identify signs that indicate fish are feeding confidently, and how to respond accordingly.

Preparing Groundbait and Pellets 5 mins

Hands-on experience will be given in mixing groundbait to the correct consistency and preparing soaked pellets. Participants will be shown how to create compact, well-mixed bait that breaks down appropriately in the water. This includes understanding the impact of water temperature, depth, and fish behaviour on bait choice.

Matching Hook Baits to Conditions 5 mins

Juniors will discover how different hook baits—such as maggots, corn, pellets, and worms—can be paired with feeders depending on water conditions and fish response. The group will also explore baiting tools like bands and quick stops, learning how to mount baits securely and effectively.

Controlling the Fish 5 mins

Playing a hooked fish requires skill, patience, and an understanding of rod mechanics. This session teaches juniors how to maintain line tension, use the rod’s action to absorb sudden movements, and adjust the drag as needed. They will practice keeping calm under pressure and letting the rod do the work.

Landing Techniques 5 mins

Landing a fish safely is just as important as hooking it. Participants will learn the correct way to use a landing net, including when to reach, how to guide fish into the net, and how to lift safely. Special attention is given to timing and coordination, particularly as fish near the bank.

Safe Unhooking & Fish Care 5 mins

Unhooking a fish must be done quickly and safely to minimise stress or harm. Juniors will be introduced to unhooking mats, forceps, and disgorgers, and will practice using each with supervision. They’ll also learn how to wet their hands, handle fish gently, and return them to the water responsibly.

Putting It All Together 5 mins

The final week brings everything together in a fully practical fishing session. Juniors will be expected to set up independently, choose their feeders and baits, and begin fishing under light supervision. The goal is to build self-sufficiency and apply the full range of skills learned throughout the course.

Adapting to the Swim 5 mins

Conditions on the day will be discussed—wind, water clarity, temperature—and juniors will be challenged to adapt their feeding and fishing strategy accordingly. This critical thinking element encourages anglers to respond to real-world factors rather than follow a rigid routine.

Assessment & Recognition 5 mins

Each participant will complete a short multiple-choice quiz covering key course concepts. Additionally, coaches will observe and provide feedback on their rig setup, casting technique, fish playing, and handling skills. Those who complete the course successfully will be awarded a Certificate of Completion—a proud recognition of their progress and feeder fishing competence.
