About This Course
This action-packed 4-week course is designed to help juniors take their angling to the next level using pole fishing—an accurate, hands-on technique perfect for younger anglers. Across four structured sessions, juniors will explore key pole fishing fundamentals, from setting up equipment and feeding swims, to choosing rigs and handling fish with care.
With plenty of practical guidance, they’ll gradually build up their confidence and knowledge. By the end of the programme, they’ll be able to fish independently using pole gear and put their skills to the test during a friendly final session and skills-based mini assessment.
Whether they’re brand new to pole fishing or looking to improve, this course provides a safe, fun, and focused way to level up their technique—and celebrate their achievements with a certificate to take home!
Course Structure
Young anglers will begin by exploring what makes pole fishing unique. They'll learn the differences compared to rod-and-reel methods and get hands-on with setting up poles, seat boxes, rollers, and attachments. Safety is a priority, with tips on handling carbon sections and dressing appropriately for the bank.
Objectives:
- Understand 3 pros and cons of pole fishing
- Identify core gear used in pole fishing
- Learn how to safely set up and break down pole sections
This session focuses on attracting fish and managing them once hooked. Juniors will compare feeding tools—like toss pots and cupping kits—and practice playing fish using elastic and top kits. They'll also learn how to unhook fish safely and with minimal stress.
Objectives:
- Compare different feeding methods
- Use elastic safely to play and guide fish
- Practice lap unhooking with guidance
Bonus activity: Watch match anglers and note how they prevent fish losses during the fight.
It’s all about fine-tuning the setup. Juniors will explore elastic ratings, rig types (margin, shallow, jigger), and hook sizes for various baits. They’ll build confidence in matching gear to fishing situations, and understand how conditions affect tackle choice.
Objectives:
- Match elastic to fish and season
- Identify different float and rig styles
- Choose appropriate hook sizes for baits
Bonus activity: Browse YouTube or angling blogs to see rig diagrams and elastic in action.
The final session is practical and rewarding. Juniors will apply everything they’ve learned in a coached fishing session and complete a short quiz and rig setup challenge. It’s a celebration of their growth and learning.
Objectives:
- Independently fish using pole gear
- Demonstrate feeding, rig selection, and fish care
- Complete end-of-course quiz and practical task
