About This Course

This engaging 4-week course is designed to introduce junior anglers to the exciting world of waggler fishing, a popular method for catching silverfish such as roach, rudd, and skimmers. Whether children are brand new to fishing or looking to develop specific float fishing skills, this course provides a step-by-step approach to learning the art of waggler angling in a supportive, hands-on environment.

Throughout the four weeks, juniors will focus on building key skills such as casting accuracy, float control, bite detection, and playing and landing fish. Each session is carefully structured to balance education with enjoyment, combining interactive warm-up activities, guided practical fishing time, and end-of-session reflection to reinforce what they’ve learned.

Sessions last 2 hours and are delivered by experienced coaches who provide individual support, encouragement, and supervision. From learning about tackle and setting up rigs, to reading float movements and handling fish safely, every child will gain confidence, knowledge, and a deeper appreciation for angling.

By the end of the course, juniors will not only understand the mechanics of waggler fishing but will also be able to apply their skills during a friendly match — celebrating their progress in a fun, inclusive atmosphere.

Course Structure

Understanding the basics of waggler fishing 5 mins

Juniors will learn the fundamentals of waggler fishing — a method using a straight or insert float for detecting bites. The session covers basic float mechanics, line setup, and how this technique helps target silverfish effectively.

Learning about rods, reels, and tackle setup 5 mins

This hands-on session introduces float rods (10–12ft), fixed-spool reels, line selection, and barbless hook safety. Juniors will set up their own rigs under coach guidance and identify each component's role.

Practicing basic casting techniques 5 mins

Children will practice controlled casting into designated safe zones, with an emphasis on accuracy and safety. Coaches will reinforce awareness of surroundings and correct posture.

Improving casting accuracy 5 mins

Juniors will build on Week 1 skills by working on target-based casting. Coaches will create fun challenges using floating targets or bank markers to improve control, consistency, and confidence in casting.

Learning how to control line drift 5 mins

Children will learn how to manage the line after casting to reduce drag and keep the float presenting the bait naturally. Techniques like mending the line and adjusting rod position will be introduced.

Understanding the impact of wind and current 5 mins

This session explores how external factors like wind, surface drift, or tow affect bait presentation. Juniors will experiment in different conditions and observe how to adjust shotting or casting angles.

Recognising different types of bites 5 mins

Children will explore how to interpret float signals, including dips, lifts, and sail-away movements. Coaches will explain what different bite patterns mean and how to tell a real bite from line drift.

Practicing timely and effective striking 5 mins

Juniors will use soft rigs and float indicators to practice striking at the right moment. They'll focus on reacting calmly and efficiently to improve hook-up rates without overstriking.

Understanding float movement and fish activity 5 mins

The session includes observing how fish behaviour translates to float motion. Children will begin associating species types with different bite patterns and learn how to anticipate a strike.

Mastering the technique of playing fish 5 mins

Juniors will practice keeping pressure on the line, adjusting their drag, and steering fish safely away from snags. Coaches will help them stay calm and controlled during the excitement of landing a fish.

Learning how to use landing nets effectively 5 mins

They'll be taught how to guide fish into a landing net properly, lifting safely and using unhooking mats and disgorgers to handle fish humanely and confidently.

Friendly Match: Putting it all together 120 mins

A low-pressure, fun competition where juniors apply everything they've learned — from casting to bait presentation to striking and landing fish. Points are awarded for participation, teamwork, and catch success.
