Our junior was once again invited to fish the Taunton Angling Association’s match. We asked our members who would be interested in putting the whip course into action in a match situation and a few of the members took up the challenge.

We met at the match location and discussed our tactics on how we would fish the match and pretty much we were all in agreement whip to hand would be the best tactic. Our juniors que’d up for the draw and they then went off to their pegs.

Once at their pegs our coaches helped them make up some Sensas Canal Black 3000 ground bait, we used a flour sieve to remove the large particles and then made up some sloppy ground bait.

Our coaches helped the juniors set up their fishing tackle and we then started to plumb up the swims. We decided that we would fish 2 to 3 swims depending on the juniors age, mainly as we did not want to confuse our younger members.

Once we had finished plumbing up for the whip our more experienced members set up their 3rd line on the pole, this would be their chopped worm / caster line in hope for a large bonus fish. Our research has led us to believe that there has been some good tench, bream and perch showing in recent weeks.

We then waited for the whistle for the match to start, our older members went straight out cuping in chopped worm and maggots onto their far lines, our younger members used what they had learnt on the beginners course and started fishing whip to hand. It was soon apparent this was the tactic to use as our members were catching a fish every 1 – 3 minutes, some being inundated with small bleak and consistently catching, we found that throwing a few pinkies over the top of the juniors whip line allowed them to pick up some larger fish and they soon started catching roach and small bream.

Every 30 minutes our older members would go out on their pole line for 5 minutes to see if any of the bonus fish had wandered into the swim, if there were no bites they juniors then went and refed and back onto their whip line. Unfortunately the bonus lines were not productive this match but our juniors stayed positive and are hoping they will become productive in the next match.

Overall the match was a great success and a nice way to put everything we have been teaching into practice and the bonus for the club was one of our members finished 2nd losing by just 2 ounces. We are very proud of all the members that went to the match and would like to thank the Junior TAA Match Club for their hospitality and invitation.
